I just finished reading Tony Hsieh’s new book, “Delivering Happiness.” There are so many great stories and suggestions in this book, I want to share them with you over my next few blog posts. By all means, buy the book. It’s a great read for anyone who owns, or wants to impact, a business.
In the early days of Zappo’s, as other .com’s were closing due to lack of funding, Zappo’s had to lay off some of its staff. When they did so, everyone who stayed at the company stepped up and the layoffs did not hurt the company’s productivity. They had laid off the underperformers and non believers. Since everyone remaining with the company was so passionate about the company and believed in what they were doing, they accomplished just as much work as they had before.
This reaffirms a lesson from an earlier post, the power of instilling passion throughout an entire company can drive that company to reach new heights and reminds me of a quote from Margaret Mead, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” The same is true for a successful business.
Are your employees passionate about your business?
If not, what are you going to do about it?
